Arturo Coello and Agustín Tapia Seal Their Reign; Bea González and Claudia Fernández Claim Their First Major
The GNP Mexico Premier Padel Acapulco Major 2025 concluded with two spectacular finals on November 30 at the Arena GNP Seguros, crowning champions and solidifying the year-end world rankings. The tournament, the penultimate of the season, confirmed the absolute dominance of the men's world No. 1 pair and witnessed the unstoppable ascent of a young duo in the women's category.
Men's Final: Coello and Tapia, an "Impenetrable Wall" Secures World No. 1
The highly anticipated men's final pitted the ranking leaders, Arturo Coello and Agustín Tapia, against their fierce rivals, Federico Chingotto and Alejandro Galán. In what marked their 13th encounter of the season, the Spanish-Argentine pair (Coello/Tapia) prevailed in a tense and dramatic 1 hour and 43-minute match with a final score of 6-4, 7-6(5).
Coello and Tapia set the tone early, securing a crucial break in the third game of the first set on Galán's serve. Despite the efforts of Chingotto and Galán to improve their defense and anticipation, the favorites maintained their edge with Coello’s powerful left-handed drives, closing the set 6-4.
The second set was an emotional rollercoaster. Chingotto and Galán reacted aggressively and surged to a 5-2 lead, pushing the match to the brink. However, the mental resilience of Coello and Tapia, aptly described as an "impenetrable wall," allowed them to mount a comeback and force a tiebreak. In a vibrant finish, the No. 1 pair took the tiebreaker 7-5, sealing their 12th title of 2025.
This victory is doubly significant: it not only grants them the Major trophy and a prize of €47,250 for each player but also mathematically confirms their position as the World No. 1 pair for the third consecutive year (2023, 2024, and 2025), a historic achievement. Their focus now shifts to the Masters Final in Barcelona to complete a dream season.
Women's Final: The Power of Youth: González and Fernández Win Their First Major
In the women's final, youth and momentum prevailed. Bea González (24) and Claudia Fernández (19) delivered a commanding performance to defeat the world No. 1 pair, Gemma Triay and Delfina Brea, with a score of 6-2, 6-4.
González and Fernández, holding a favorable 6-2 head-to-head record against their opponents, demonstrated tactical superiority from the start. In the opening set, "La Perla del Palo" (González) excelled in rallies, while Fernández neutralized attacks with her solid defense, leading to a quick 6-2 set win.
Although Triay and Brea attempted a comeback in the second set, the enthusiastic Mexican crowd gave an extra boost to González, who shone at the net. Fernández complemented this with "impossible saves," maintaining control until the final 6-4 score.
This triumph marks the pair's fifth title of the season and their first outdoor Major, a milestone that positions them as serious contenders for the world throne in 2026. According to Bea González, the key to their success lies in their growth through adversity: “In the tough moments, we've grown stronger... we had to play at our best [to win]”. The Acapulco Major underscores the excellent synergy of this young duo, who will now pursue the Masters title in Barcelona.
